Students and staff from Cowbridge and Stanwell Comprehensive Schools have been thanked by the Welsh Blood Service for donations given at a blood donation sessions.

Between them, over 100 donations were collected.

Mrs Debra Thomas, Headteacher at Cowbridge Comprehensive School praised those who took part:

We are very proud of our students for their commitment to saving lives. Every blood donation made can save up to three lives so collectively our pupils have already potentially saved over three hundred lives in Wales! “I am immensely proud of the students and staff for helping us reach these incredible figures.”

After making her first donation, sixth form student Darcy said:

Donating blood isn’t all that scary. It is really important for students to join the programme as the Welsh Blood Service is always in need of new donors, so I would definitely say ‘do it’. I’m so glad I did!”

Following the sessions, more than 90 students have also signed up to the Welsh Bone Marrow Donor Registry; a database of over 35 million unique donors from across the globe.

Stanwell became the first school in Wales to host its own donation sessions for students and staff in 2015. Last year, they were joined by Cowbridge as part of WBS’s comprehensive schools programme.

Based on their success, the WBS recently launched an initiative to increase the number of schools hosting their very own donation sessions. It is predicated that the scheme will help secure an additional 300 first time donors each year.

Alan Prosser, Director of Service at the Welsh Blood Service said:

We would like to thank the students and the members of staff who have selflessly contributed towards the 100,000 donations needed in Wales each year. They have shown fantastic commitment and great community spirit. “If you have never donated before, now is a great time to try.”

Mae Gwasanaeth Gwaed Cymru (GGC) wedi diolch i ddisgyblion a staff ysgolion gyfun Stanwell a’r Bont-faen am eu cyfraniadau mewn sesiynau rhoi gwaed.

Rhyngddynt gwelsant dros 100 o gyfraniadau. Rhoddodd Mrs Debra Thomas, Pennaeth Ysgol Gyfun Y Bont-faen ganmoliaeth i’r rhai hynny a gymerodd ran:

“Rydym yn falch iawn o’n myfyrwyr am eu hymrwymiad i achub bywydau. Gall pob cyfraniad o waed achub hyd at dri bywyd felly gyda’i gilydd mae ein disgyblion o bosib eisoes wedi achub dros tri chant o fywydau yng Nghymru! “Rwy’n hynod o falch o’r myfyrwyr a staff am ein helpu i gyrraedd y ffigyrau gwych hyn.”

Ar ôl rhoi gwaed am y tro cyntaf, dywedodd y fyfyrwraig yn y chweched dosbarth, Darcy: “

Nid yw rhoi gwaed yn unrhyw beth i’w ofni. Mae’n bwysig iawn i fyfyrwyr ymuno â’r rhaglen gan fod angen rhoddwyr newydd ar Wasanaeth Gwaed Cymru o hyd, felly byddwn yn bendant yn dweud ‘gwnewch e’.

Dwi mor falch i fi wneud!” Yn dilyn y sesiynau, mae dros 90 myfyriwr hefyd wedi cofrestru gyda Chofrestr Rhoddwyr Mêr Esgyrn Cymru; cronfa ddata o dros 35 miliwn o roddwyr unigryw o bob cwr o’r byd.

Daeth Stanwell yr ysgol gyntaf yng Nghymru i gynnal ei sesiynau rhoi ei hun ar gyfer myfyrwyr a staff yn 2015. Y llynedd, ymunodd y Bont-Faen â nhw fel rhan o raglen ysgolion cyfun GGC.

Ar sail y llwyddiant hynny, lansiodd GGC fenter i gynyddu nifer yr ysgolion sy’n cynnal eu sesiynau rhoi gwaed eu hunain. Rhagwelir y bydd y cynllun yn fodd i sicrhau 300 o roddwyr ychwanegol sy’n gwneud hynny am y tro cyntaf, bob blwyddyn.

Dywedodd Alan Prosser, Cyfarwyddwr Gwasanaethau Gwasanaeth Gwaed Cymru:

“Fe hoffem ni ddiolch i’r disgyblion ac aelodau staff a gyfrannodd yn anhunanol tuag at y 100,000 uned y mae eu hangen arnon ni yng Nghymru eleni. Maen nhw wedi dangos ymroddiad ardderchog ac ysbryd cymunedol gwych. Os nad ydych erioed wedi rhoi o’r blaen, mae nawr yn amser gwych i roi cynnig arni.”
